While most people know you should be getting seven to nine hours of sleep a night, sometimes it can be hard to get out of the way. And, if you find that you’re regularly struggling to fall asleep on time, it’s understandable to search around for a sleep aid that can help with the process. Sleep experts say there is no magic tool that can make you fall asleep on command, but there are some products that can help you fall asleep, including Sleep Well Scented Aromatherapy Balm, which uses the scents of lavender and ylang-ylang to help you doze off.

Let’s go back a minute. Aromatherapy has been used for centuries to address a number of different issues, but can it help with sleep? There’s actually something about this, Chris Winter, MD, sleep specialist, neurologist, and host of the Sleep unplugged podcasts, says Yahoo Life.

“There have been a few sleep studies where researchers do a great job of fixing things in a controlled way. Lavender in particular always seems to show superiority in helping people fall asleep,” she says. “There is evidence to support the benefits of lavender for sleep.”

One study of college students, for example, found that those who started a sleep hygiene routine that incorporated the scent of lavender had better quality sleep afterwards. They also reported feeling more rested when they woke up. Another study found that people reported better quality sleep and felt more “vigorous” after being exposed to the scent of lavender while sleeping. They also had an increase in delta wave slow wave sleep, which is linked to deeper levels of relaxation and restful sleep.

Using something lavender-scented like scented balm “won’t necessarily fix anything if someone is up for hours at night, but it might be better than nothing,” says Winter. Using aromatherapy as part of your bedtime ritual can also help signal your brain that it’s time to sleep when you smell it, she says. “Your brain starts associating that smell with sleep,” she says. “You are creating a positive association.”

Winter says he likes products that use aromatherapy for sleep, especially while traveling. “I think having that kind of thing helps,” she says. “You are in an unfamiliar hotel room, but you carry this scented stick with you… it creates the feeling that you are sleeping in your happy place.”

Sleep Well Aromatherapy Scented Balm is packed with a range of scents designed to help you relax and sleep, including Lavender, Chamomile, Palmarosa, Clove and Ylang-Ylang. However, the properties of lavender have been the most studied and appear to have the greatest benefits for sleep.

The scents are packaged in a shea butter, moringa and beeswax based balm that you can easily glide over the points on your wrist. To use, simply apply the balm to spots such as the wrists, temples and neck before going to bed. (The brand specifically recommends doing this 30 minutes before slipping into the sheets.) Next, stick to your bedtime routine.

About 1,200 Amazon shoppers swear by this scented stick for a better night’s sleep. “It works. It really works,” said one five-star fan. “I apply to my wrists and neck (I’m not a fan of temples; I haven’t noticed any effect) and as I lay down, I take a deep breath and take in the perfume. It really puts me to sleep over the finish line.”

Another happy customer shared this testimonial: “It put me to sleep.”
